The Hansen-Lochbaum Building was the home of the Sumas News .  The building was built in 1912 on the west side of the Cherry Street facing  towards the east on the north corner of Harrison Street. Moe's Hill (as it is currently known) is visible in the background. The Sumas News was in operation from 1889 until November 25, 1965 and was an important source of information for the local region.  According to the National Endowment of for the Humanity website, "Chronicling America.",  the publisher was L.A. Lymburner.

The red arrow at the top right hand side of the map shows where the Sumas News building was located.  At the time that this map was printed the Hansen-Lochbaum Building was newly built.  The top of the map is north and you can see where the Canada border is marked.

After the Sumas News ceased production, the building was converted to the lively Maple Leaf Tavern.  A favored nightspot frequented by Americans and Canadians alike.  An aerial view of the Maple Leaf tavern can be seen on my earlier posting from March 25, 2014 .

In 1988 the lovely old building was finally torn down to accommodate the traffic lanes for the soon to be constructed current United State Customs and Immigration building.  The sad end  of a grand old building.

In the background on the left side of the picture, Moe Hill is clearly visible.  To the right of the demolition is the traffic lane for the 3rd Customs and Immigration Building.

With the Hansen -Lochbaum Building mostly torn down the 3rd customs and Immigration Building's distinctive barn shaped roof is prominent in the background.  It was later moved to another location.

  1. My grandparents Rich and Barbara Burrus owned and ran the Maple Leaf until they had to sell for customs to expand. A little sad to see but still interesting.

  2. My parents Richard and Barbara Burrus owned the building and I grew up upstairs in an apartment from birth in 1968 until 1985 when our building was purchased for the border expansion. This brings back so many wonderful memories for me growing up in Sumas.

  3. I have beautiful memories of my time at the Maple Leaf Tavern. I was seven or eight years old I guess when I met Rich and Barb's youngest daughter Verdie. We got into all kinds of trouble in the apartment immediately above the Tavern. I remember every dog, (especially Bobby, Moose, Peppy, and Candy) and every Ahab the Arab skit, the slumber parties, dancing or skating on the dance floor in the Tavern below, and running up and down those stairs chasing after our childhood dreams. I almost forgot to mention, my dad's band was the house band at the Maple Leaf during the late 70's and early 80's. (Jim Cowen, Marty Bowen and John Estigoy (sp))...I believe Scooter Jackson played with them a bit as well. I'm sure I left someone out.

I haven't been back to Sumas since 1982. Seeing the images of the old Maple Leaf coming down tugged at my heart in a big way. The building may be gone, but the love, laughter, and life lessons I experienced there shaped the person I am today, and for that, I will always be grateful to the Maple Leaf Tavern. =)

  5. I remember this tavern fondly. Played on the 8 ball house team and remember Rich and Barb very fondly . Many good times at the tavern and actually dated their daughter the odd time she visited from Seattle (I think ? )She drove (aggressively)a dodge or plymouth when I had my Sunbeam Tiger. Nice young lady- can't remember her name but mine was Wilf
